Tuesday's Musical Notes - "The Greatest Show" (The cast of The Greatest Showman)

Welcome to Tuesday!!!  Welcome to 2018 and another year of the blog that continually asks the questions...1) Is there really good music still being made? 2) Can these melodies combined with lyrics make an impact on our lives today? 3) What difference do I make as I go through this life?  Wait...that is a little heavy for a blog that purports the playful pentatonic and merry minors that infiltrate the musical fabric of our lives...really...you expect something less?

Welcome to Tuesday's Musical Notes, the blog that combines the best of music at the behest of pondering life's mysteries.  Most weeks we choose ear candy from previous years.  Ah...the good 'ol days...  Every once in a while we plunder the plethora of more recent music to engage readers with the diversity of which we are so pleased to enjoy in our day and age.

Today is such a day where Tuesday's Musical Notes hopes to create a sense of desire, a pathway to passion, a fortissimo of feelings towards some new music introduced in a way that only the modern day cinema can do, via The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you will direct your attention to the center of your screen, we present for your intended pleasure a listening extravaganza of the like you have never experienced before!!!  (unless of course, you've seen the film) Tuesday's Musical Notes is pleased to present a song that will have you exclaiming..."WOAH!!!"

On December 20th, 2017 a movie debuted based VERY loosely on the life of Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum, The Greatest Showman.  In your humble blogger's opinion, this movie lives up to its opening song and today's feature song.   It is one of the best movies I have seen in years.  What makes it so great you may ask?  Allow me the following elucidation.  It beckons back to a big movie musical age that we haven't seen in many years.  Is this a trend?  I sure hope so.  I'm told 2016's La La Land is similar.  They share the same lyricist, so one can only imagine there are some similarities.   The Greatest Showman features a cast of likable characters with flaws. The characters are instantly relatable.  They overcome their flaws to succeed in the early days of show business when there were no green screens, digital reshoots, or stuntmen standing by to shoot dangerous scenes.  Yes, there were deceptions in the original PT Barnum museum, and this movie hints at such things. (again, VERY loosely based...) But this movie goes past any of those deceptions to tap into the entrepreneurial American spirit.  This untoward company is not superheroes, they are not fighting a galactic war, nor are they getting zapped into a video game. But they have maintained a #4 box office behind the aforementioned themes.  If you love music, if you love happy endings, if you love, love stories, if you love show business, you HAVE to see this film.   Here's the trailer in case you need further convincing:

"God spoke: "Light!"" - (Genesis 1:2a The Message paraphrase of the Bible). "Woah!" "Ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for..."Woah!" Been searching in the dark, your sweat soaking through the floor..."   In reality, the greatest show began long before P.T. Barnum and his American Museum.  Some scientists would place the creation of the earth at millions of years ago. ( Earth’s Beginnings: The Origins of Life By Eric McLamb, September 10, 2011, ecology.com Others view creation as having happened only 4000-5000 years ago.  (Could God Really Have Created Everything in Six Days? by Ken Ham on September 27, 2007, answersingenesis.com)  We highly recommend you read both of the above articles, not just the one in which you are most likely to agree.   There are some big differences in the ideologies that each article purports.  With age there is coming a sense in me that very little is in the gray areas that so many folks choose in which to develop their world view.  Reality however dictates that the overwhelming majority of what we make decisions regarding comes down to this.  Is this truth or not? There is no middle ground, confusing gray area.  What is your spirit telling you is the truth?  Tuesday's Musical Notes leans more towards the Answers In Genesis model, yet we chose to provide both ends of the creation spectrum for your perusal.  Regardless of the timeline, when God spoke light into existence, it became the greatest light show ever.

"God spoke: Sky! In the middle of the waters; separate water from water!" (Genesis 1:6 The Message) "Woah!" "And buried in your bones there's an ache that you can't ignore Taking your breath, stealing your mind And all that was real is left behind..."  At this moment, in the newly formed light, there was a separation between moisture in the atmosphere and moisture in what would become earth.  Can you just imagine as light was shining for the first time that the liquid form of water was being separated from the gaseous form of water and the result of the separation was what we consider the sky.

"God spoke: “Separate!  Water-beneath-Heaven, gather into one place; Land, appear!” (Genesis 1:9 The Message) "Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya It's only this moment, don't care what comes after Your fever dream, can't you see it getting closer Just surrender 'cause you feel the feeling taking over..."  This is almost unimaginable to the mind.  The oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and ponds are all beginning to coalesce in the low places where the land begins to surround it as it is rising up to take its place as the earth.

"God spoke: “Earth, green up! Grow all varieties of seed-bearing plants, Every sort of fruit-bearing tree.” (Genesis 1:11 The Message)  "It's fire, it's freedom, it's flooding open It's a preacher in the pulpit and you'll find propulsion, There's something breaking at the brick of every wall it's holding I'll let you know, so tell me do you wanna go?"  I can't imagine that this was a normal process of vegetation. Can you see with your mind's eye all sorts of grass, bushes, and trees growing as if they were in a time-lapse video loop?  Time Lapse of Sunflower from Seed to Flower

"God spoke: “Lights! Come out!  Shine in Heaven’s sky!  Separate Day from Night.  Mark seasons and days and years, Lights in Heaven’s sky to give light to Earth."  (Genesis 1:14 The Message) "Where it's covered in all the colored lights, Where the runaways are running the night, Impossible comes true, it's taking over you,  Oh, this is the greatest show!"   Does anyone need a calendar?  This is how our system of time began.  Time began ticking, ticking, ticking into the future when God called night and day to be different. At that moment history began.  At that moment there was a future and a past.  At that moment, the show was just getting started!  Woah!!!

"God spoke: “Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life!
Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!” (Genesis 1:20 The Message)  "
We light it up, we won't come down, And the sun can't stop us now, Watching it come true, it's taking over you, Oh, this is the greatest show!!!"  Organisms that we still see today became real at this juncture.  They flew and they swam as the grand director read His score to the soundtrack of life.

"God spoke: “Earth, generate life! Every sort and kind:  cattle and reptiles and wild animals—all kinds.” (Genesis 1:24 The Message) "Don't fight it, it's coming for you, running at ya, It's only this moment, don't care what comes after, It's blinding outside and I think that you know, Just surrender 'cause you're calling and you wanna go"  The basics of everything we know of as life, everything that was needed to support what we know of as life, the perfection that only a Holy Creator God could make, was here at this point in time.  But the show wasn't over!

"God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.”  (Genesis 1:26 The Message)

"Where it's covered in all the colored lights
Where the runaways are running the night
Impossible comes true, intoxicating you
Oh, this is the greatest show
We light it up, we won't come down
And the sun can't stop us now
Watching it come true, it's taking over you
Oh, this is the greatest show"

God waited until the zenith of creation to make and reveal the star of His show, His masterpiece!  Man was created to reflect the nature of God.  Man was created to be responsible for the rest of what had been created, including the earth.  Man was created to have a relationship with God.  That relationship was and is now broken.  But now, He waits to restore you.  He's everything you ever want, He's everything you ever need, and He's waiting right in front of you. Tell me do you wanna go?

Even with all of this grandeur, as the Greatest Show of creation comes to a close, something lurks in the shadows portending choices that will be made and ultimately a sacrifice that will be given.

P.T. Barnum was a great coordinator of entertainment.  He was known all over the world for his shows of the astounding.  Yet, in all his years of making people gasp and smile, his was not the greatest show.  That title was reserved for THE Ringmaster In The Beginning...

'Til Tuesday

Serving Him by serving You,
randy
