Tuesday's Musical Notes - Theme from "The Munsters" (Jack Marshall)

Welcome to Tuesday!  Today is Halloween!  Time for masks, makeup, merriment, and munchies!!!  It is also time for the Halloween edition of Tuesday's Musical Notes!  Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

Today is a day unlike any other in most Western cultures.  It is celebrated in a variety of ways.  Some very bright and festive, others, well, let's face it, there can really be a lot of darkness in this world.  For the most part, Halloween represents a fun day for children to costumize themselves and get enough candy to last for the entire year!  (I think with the price of candy, however, homemade treats may become vogue again, very soon.)  So trick or treaters, be grateful! Even if all you get is a rock.  Many folks in the 60's paid good money for pet rocks...including the ones who lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane...

Did you know The Munsters' Theme had words??!!!!

The television show The Munsters began on September 24, 1964.  Universal Studios produced The Munsters.    Universal had produced the classic monster movies of the 30's and 40's and owned the rights to the look of Frankenstein and other popular monster protagonists.  Thus lending to the authenticity of costuming for its principal characters and adding to the popularity of the show. The Munsters was produced by the creators of another classic tv series, Leave It To Beaver and quickly became a top 10 hit for CBS.   The 30-minute program mixed macabre with comedy and garnered the attention of children and adults alike.   Featuring previously paired actors Fred Gywnne and Al Lewis (Car 54, Where Are You?) and motion picture actress Yvonne DeCarlo (The Ten Commandments), The Munsters quickly went to syndication and has rarely been off of the airwaves since. It competed directly with ABC's The Addams Family and for the most part managed better Neilsen ratings than Gomez and his clan.   The Munsters ran for only two years and was canceled as its ratings ironically fell to another tv show featuring a bat, the technicolor Batman.

Part of the charm of The Munsters was their ability to look past the differences of other folks and function in society.  While people on their street weren't happy they were there, Herman, Lily, Granpa, Marilyn, and Eddy all were excited to visit with the people in their neighborhood and engage with folks who were very much unlike themselves.  Many comparisons to the family sitcoms of the day elevated the allure of The Munsters to families around the world.  It really was a family oriented, monster themed, comedy that worked beautifully based on the obvious good relationship that the cast members shared.

Have you ever had THAT neighbor?  Perhaps they have a dog that won't start barking.  Maybe they have car parts strewn all over the front yard.  You know, the family you suspect are cooking meth in the backyard?  Perchance they happen to be an unmarried couple living together or homosexual.  Without even trying hard, it wouldn't take too long for you to find fault with the people who live down your street.  Or maybe, just maybe, you are THAT neighbor!

I am by no means suggesting that you should ever allow yourself to be taken advantage of, or harmed by your neighbor.  I do think at times, even those who claim Jesus as their Savior, are very quick to judge folks that are not like us.  Without even trying we find our comparables to be something with which we can take issue.  Many times this manifests itself into a superiority complex that at the very least is disingenuous, and at the most is off-putting and hateful.  We've touched base on the necessary attitude adjustments needed to overcome these preconceived notions before in  Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Try A Little Kindness"

For many years, church attendees in the Western hemisphere have not done a very good job of being great neighbors. I can testify to this as this indictment applies to me.

For many years I worked in retail sales.  As such, we relocated quite often.  I personally have had the opportunity to have at the least 9 different sets of neighbors in the places we have moved.  This just accounts for those on either side of my home.  I hope that I have been a good neighbor. I sometimes wonder, however,  if I was a GREAT neighbor in the fact that either ostensibly or directly, I exemplified the Christ that I serve to these folks.

Sometimes our neighbors are identified differently than what we may expect.  In The Gospel of Jesus according to Luke chapter 10 verses 25-37 The Message paraphrase of the Bible/ English Standard Version of the Bible/King James Version of the Bible parallel Jesus defines who is one's neighbor.  Take a moment and ponder how merciful you have been to those you encounter. Mercy can come in many forms, but sharing the Gospel of Jesus is the most merciful thing you could possibly do for anyone!

Your address is probably not 1313 Mockingbird Lane.  And chances are your neighbor doesn't have pale grey-green skin.  But there are other things that make you just ever so slightly nervous about them coming to your door this Halloween.  Show mercy by not judging by any other standard other than the standard Jesus' uses when He proclaims in The Gospel of Jesus according to the disciple Matthew chapter 22 verses 34-40 The Message/ESV/KJV for us to love our neighbors as ourselves...and maybe you should make them some cookies instead of purchasing candy this year...

Who knows, your neighbors may even look something like this:

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "The Name Game" (Shirley Ellis)

The day it is Tuesday, so welcome on in!  You like reading blogs, so let us begin!  You've come to the place where it's safe to explore.  So explore and explore, there's insight galore!  Your favorite songs are all taken and twisted.  There are even some blogs that make your eyes misted.  So click on brave soul you never know what's next.  Put your phone down, read the blog, it's better than texts.

Welcome to Tuesday, The Notes they are new!  There's always something special that's waiting for you!  Music and message all join in one place.  To bring out a grin or broad smile to your face.  It's the week before Halloween and The Notes they aren't spooky.  But we've featured a song that is kinda...well... kooky!  Enjoy and dig in, it's a blast from the past.  Featuring rhymes and some names, see how long you can last.

Welcome to Tuesday, take off your coats.  It's time, yes it's time, for the Musical Notes!!!

This is a season that many dress up in costume and assume a different identity.  Some costumes are elaborate, others well, again, that's why you got a rock in your candy bucket.  It's at this time that the persona in which you regale yourself takes on a life of its own.  Be careful, stay in reality, don't get too caught up in your secret alternate personality.  At this time of year, you must guard against playing too closely to the name game...

Recorded in 1964, today's featured song by R&B singer Shirley Ellis has become a classic to generation after generation.  It made its way up the Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at #3.  Not too bad for a song that is considered a "novelty" song.

Even more important is the staying power of "The Name Game".  Parents and children's television programming have perpetuated it to enthusiastic music heirs as they attempt their own name in the rhyme.  Add to this, its continual inclusion in movies and television and you have a song that is repeated by the masses to the masses.  Here is our favorite movie rendition by a very young Tom Hanks...

This classic film features Tom Hanks and Shelly Long.  While The Money Pit is a funny movie, The Notes recommends caution if you choose to watch this movie, as it features some situations and language that are not child-friendly.

The way that we associate with people is by knowing them by their name.  Without this individualistic moniker, we would lack identity.  There is much searching among our generation for identity.  People pay ancestry.com to research where they come from and who may be in their genealogical past. It seems important to some to connect with their heritage.   While our ancestors don't make us who we are, it is interesting to note similarities among ourselves and our great, greats.

Names are an important thing to God.  As you study His Word, you see occasions where God chose to change the given name of someone who was to serve Him.  Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah,Jacob became Israel, and in the New Testament Saul became Paul.  The reason for the change is that in Biblical times, one's name reflected the character of the bearer or at least the character that the parent was hoping for from the child. It seems evident that the way we are identified has some importance to God.

Also, as you read through the Bible, you will notice that there are many names for God.  This was not a game developed by the writers of the Bible to have fun or confuse the reader, in fact, each of the names listed in the Bible for God, adds to the overall understanding of His character allowing us to know Him better.  948 Names and Titles of God - christiananswers.net

Finally, Bible scholars remind us that if a phrase or word are repeated, then they are a matter of import.  To that point, several popular translations of the Bible have the word "name" or its derivative over 1000 times. (American Standard Version, English Standard Version, King James Version, New American Standard Version, New King James Version, New Revised Standard Version, and the World English Version)  There is even one translation of the Bible that restores the Hebrew name of God in place of the English generics that populate many translations. biblegateway.com introduction to the Names of God version of the Bible

In the very first chapter of the very first book of the Bible, God begins the process of identification by providing names to light and darkness.  (Genesis 1:3-5 The Message paraphrase of the Bible) God also mentions the placement of His Name on the forehead of those people who are His in the very last chapter of the very last book of His Word.  (Revelation 22:1-5 New International Version of the Bible)

One of the most important conversations that God had with mankind is the one He had with Moses.  (Exodus 3 The Message/English Standard Version of the Bible/NIV)  God later provides a commandment to Moses regarding His name Exodus 20:7 The Message/ESV/KJV  It is a shame that in our modern culture, God's name is taken in vain a lot.  Think about it.  The G in OMG could stand for the word goodness, gracious, or any other number of words.  Here in fact is a list of words that begin with "g" for your utilization today: Words that start with G - wordfind.com  You're welcome!!!   To this day, Orthodox Jews will not speak the name Yahweh as it is considered to be too holy to say out loud.

Later on, through the use of a parable, Jesus describes the relationship He has with those He calls His own.    (The Gospel of Jesus according to the disciple John 10:1-18 The Message/ESV/KJV)  This passage details an intimacy that is hard to contemplate, given that Jesus was God.  Because of this incredible relationship, Jesus goes on to say in Luke that we have no reason to be afraid of anything.  We can go about our lives confidently because God is in control.  He knows us so well, that He knows the number of hairs on our head and the number of days we will have in our lifetime.  (The Gospel of Jesus according to Luke chapter 12 The Message/ESV/KJVJob 14:1-17 The Message/ESV/KJV)

Finally, in the book of Revelation, names play a significant role in determining destination.  Revelation 21 The Message/ESV/KJV  Is your name in that book?  Want to know for sure that it is?

To be confident that your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life referred to in Revelation 21, you must believe.  Believe that Jesus was born via virgin birth (The Gospel of Jesus according to the disciple Matthew 1:18-25 The Message/ESV/KJV), believe that His mission on earth was to provide a way that man could be with God upon death (John 14 The Message/ESV/KJV), believe that He died a physical death to implement that way (Matthew 27:32-56 The Message/ESV/KJV), believe His dead body was placed in a sealed tomb (John 19:18-42 The Message/ESV/KJV), believe that He came to life after 3 days (John 20 The Message/ESV/KJV), and believe that He now waits at the right hand of God to return for those who believe (The Gospel of Jesus according to Mark chapter 16).  To believe all of this, you must have faith (Hebrews chapter 11 The Message/ESV/KJV).

God does not play any games in regards to His desire for you to be with Him in eternity future.  He draws every man, woman, boy, and girl to Himself through Holy Spirit.  The only unforgivable sin is committed when we don't respond affirmatively to that elicitation and embrace God through Holy Spirit and by Jesus' sacrifice.

God already knows your name.  He knows every step you will take and every move you will make.  He knows the details of your life down to the smallest detail.  He now awaits for you to acknowledge His invitation and by faith become adopted into His family.  At that point, your name will be written in the Book of Life, never to be erased.

So be confident dear friend.  His Word is so true.  He knows your name and He knows my name too.  His power and glory our names He secures.  When we believe on HIS Name, our lives will endure.

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "On the Dark Side" (John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band)

Good Tuesday to ya friend!!!  Welcome to the best day of the week!!!  We're over halfway through October and according to this, Countdown to Christmas Clock, time is sprinting towards the holiday season.  Ok, those of you who have Christmas decor up in your towns, homes, or businesses...stop it!  We get to experience Halloween and Thanksgiving first!  Please don't forget that these seasonal favorites exist! Resist the temptation to buy anything Christmassy until at least Halloween is over!!  Let the revolution for Halloween and Thanksgiving begin!!!  Sorry, that was a little over the top...  Stay tuned for next weeks episode where we see Randy rant about the time change...Welcome to Tuesday's Musical Notes!!!

Regardless of your feelings towards Halloween, there is much to celebrate as we transition into the cooler weather. A bountiful harvest brings warm, fresh foods that come from during only this time of the year.  Folks seem a bit chummier as they are brought indoors for a while.  Please stop texting that person who is in the same room with you.  God gave you a voice.  USE IT.  Joy abounds even in the face of a seasonal celebration that lends itself to the darker side of this world.  But it doesn't have to be that way.  And in case you haven't heard, now is the time to scout out the most sincere pumpkin patch in your area!!!    #favoritetimeoftheyear!!!

I really think the season around Halloween gets a bad rap from most believers in Jesus.  There is much made about the darkness that is prevalent in the lead up to Halloween.  But, if your hope is found in nothing less, than Jesus blood and righteousness, then why should you feel threatened by an enemy who has no power over you?  I totally understand why you would be against men, women, boys, and girls dressing up like someone they are not, and going out on a dark evening to solicit candy from strangers.  But there is something more important to think about this season than the potential sugar high (let's face it, folks, depending on your neighborhood, you don't always get M&Ms and there are those who still give out rocks for bad costumes...just sayin').

We shouldn't be fearful, but there is cause for great concern during this All Hallows eve time. While those of us who have that joy, joy, joy, joy down in our hearts, not everyone is held in the palm of God's hand.  As believers, we should not be fearful of the date October 31, but we should be very concerned about the messages that are prevalent during this season and the delivery systems of such messages.  We are a part of a battle and we must make sure we have chosen the side of the victorious.  We have a message of light that we need to share to the world.  If we don't, our friends, family, and other folks may be taking an unexpected and undesired walk on the dark side, oh yeah, on the dark side, oh yeah....

or for those of you who shout "Eddie lives!!!" every time you hear the opening piano lick...

NO, the song is not by the movie band, Eddie & the Cruisers.  In reality, today's featured song is from a band that has been around since 1972.  They got their start as a bar band and became relatively well known around the eastern seaboard region of the US.  All of that changed in 1983 when they became an international hit by recording the soundtrack for a movie about a bar band, Eddie & the Cruisers.

John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour on the strength of today's #7 single and the remainder of the tracks from the top ten soundtrack of Eddie & the Cruisers.  Due to continual comparisons to Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band in their early years, Cafferty and his bandmates were ignored by record labels.  But because of their local success, they drew the attention of producer Kenny Vance who offered them the opportunity to provide the score for the movie based on the novel of the same name.  The soundtrack for Eddie and the Cruisers was the debut album for John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.  Initially, neither the movie nor its soundtrack were a huge success.  But due to the continual rotation at MTV for the music video and HBO's heavy rotation of the movie, the soundtrack zoomed into the top ten a year after its release.  To date, the band has only released 4 studio albums, 3 of which are soundtracks.

A few years after John Cafferty started his band, specifically in 1977, a little movie came out that made the phrase, the dark side, an iconic reference to mean something possessed of evil.  Perhaps you have heard of that movie, it was called Star Wars.  Since 1977, 8 major motion pictures (Including  Rogue One, which your humble blogger thinks is better than ANY of the prequels, # 9 releases December 14, got your tickets yet? ), innumerable books, television shows (if you have some time, check out this little nugget...Star Wars Christmas Holiday Special - 1978 - CBS, isn't the internet great?!!!) and...well, you get the idea, there's been a ton of stuff released under the Star Wars license. In short, you could easily say that Star Wars has really been a big deal in the last 40 years.

Star Wars is the classic story of good vs. evil, whereby good is qualified in the characters of the Jedi and their compatriots and evil is portrayed by those on the dark side and their minions.  It is also the classic tale in the fact that there is a continual temptation of the good guys to fall to the Dark Side of the Force.  If you've never seen the movies (is that even possible?), we highly recommend viewing them in their chronological order...or if you are a purist in your movie watching, in the order they came to theaters, either way, you'll get the idea...Dark Side - bad, but redeemable, Jedi - good, but face many temptations...

The tale of the battle of good vs. evil is not a new one.  It has its origin from before the earth was created.  The Bible eludes to the history that existed before the events of Genesis.  The Bible makes it very clear that the enemy of mankind does not parade around clothed in red and carrying a pitchfork.  "What About Satan and the Origin of Evil?" by Bodie Hodge from October 7, 2014, answersingenesis.com  This article details how evil came into the perfection of God's creation.  How, if you will, the dark side came to reside on earth.  Since the Genesis narrative, the battle has been continually ramped up.  The methods have changed throughout the years, but the darkness still exists, utilizes every weapon imaginable, and will stop at nothing to complete its mission of hurting God.  The enemy does this by deceiving God's creation, you and me.  Make me feel crazy, make me feel so mean...

The Bible also details the fact that for those who believe in Jesus, the battle is already won!  We have the incredible power over the enemy since our nature was changed at the moment we chose to believe Jesus was who He said He was and did what the Bible says He did.  And He did all of that for you and me to have a new nature.

It is so easy to believe the lie that we do dark side stuff because it is our human nature.  According to the Apostle Paul in his letter to a church in Ephesus, (ruins are located on the Meditteranean Sea coast of Turkey)   Ephesians 4:17-32 English Standard Version of the Bible/New King James Version of the Bible/The Message Paraphrase of the Bible parallel, when we accept Jesus and His leadership over our lives through the work of Holy Spirit, the sin nature that we inherited from Adam is replaced by a new nature that is centered around what we learn by serving Jesus.  In light of this, we have nothing to blame but our own choices when we have our dark side moments.  We choose.  We slip to the dark side and cross that line...

Our dark side instances damage our relationship with God, but through His grace and mercy and Jesus sacrifice ("Father, forgive them for they don't know what they do" Luke 23:34 covers ALL of the dark side choices for the redeemed).  Choosing the new nature means we resist the dark side as much as we can.  James 4:1-11 ESV/NKJV/The Message Being a new nature means we put off the things of this world.  Romans 12 ESV/NKJV/The Message Living in the new nature means through Holy Spirit's power, we persevere when tempted to slip into the dark side and cross that line...

So, in the season that is coming.  Take the opportunity to remind others through the way you live your life, that you are embracing light and not the darkness.  And I guarantee you, He will never give you a rock in your candy sack.

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "You Don't Know How It Feels" (Tom Petty)

Welcome to Tuesday, the 10th of October!  Thanks for joining us as we trek into the great wide open of lyrics, Lamentations, and light!  I so appreciate the fact that you read Tuesday's Musical Notes!!  Some weeks come very easy, others, well let's just put it this way, sometimes when it comes to inspiration and writing a blog, the waiting is the hardest part.  Just about the time you get an idea, it flees and you feel like you are free fallin'.  Even during those times, we attempt to keep running down the dream and bringing you the best combination of popular music from all of time and space.  Thanks for continuing to tune in, click on, and read Tuesday's Musical Notes as it can sometimes be as fun as learning to fly (at least I'm told that can be fun)!

Tuesday's Musical Notes can be a great diversion while you're waiting for that last dance with Mary Jane.  The Notes have also been known to be therapeutic while avoiding a breakdown.  While we can't assist you if you live like a refugee, we would love to wholeheartedly pray with you that God will make things better in your life.  As you read, all we ask is that you listen to your heart and consider the musings about music and Messiah.  Finally, if you are an email reader and no longer want to receive Tuesday's Musical Notes to your inbox, just reply...don't come around here no more and we will remove you from our list.  Remember, here at Tuesday's Musical Notes our slogan is..."I won't back down" when it comes to sharing the Good News of the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ.  Now on with The Notes!!!

If you are willing to admit that you are in your late 40's or early 50's, Tom Petty's music very well could have served as a soundtrack for some of the defining years of your life.  From his first hit, 1977's "Breakdown" to his last top 20 single and today's feature song, 1994's "You Don't Know How it Feels", Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers defined popular music for a generation of radio listeners in the 70's, 80's and 90's.  Last week, popular music experienced the death of this icon in the recording industry who wasn't afraid to take on the labels (and win most times), to ensure he and his band were given the best deal they could get.  Here now in tribute is the last top 20 single by Tom Petty, the # 1 hit from 1994...

Ok, first of all, I realize that this song features a reference to smoking marijuana.  Tuesday's Musical Notes is not a proponent of any chemical substance whereby one gains a dependency,  many of which are legal in the United States.  (hmmm....is caffeine a chemical?  Ponder please)  Secondly, let's get to the point, the song is about the fact that our western culture has become far too quick to judge things (many times without complete information) and for a larger growing group of people, we have lost our ability to empathize with others.  Finally, Tom Petty was a gifted musician and lyricist, but he was still just a man.  Far too many times we elevate our heroes/icons to godlike status when in reality their humanity comes into play every day.   As an aside, growing up cowboys were some of my biggest heroes.  Especially when they carry six strings, ever seen The Fastest Guitar Alive, featuring fellow Wilbury Roy Orbison?

Tom Petty was a staple of MTV, which once actually played videos like the ones you can find on youtube.com today, but I digress.  Because of his popularity, he became the focus of several of the music video channel's documentary-like shows.  One of my favorites was always VH1's Behind the Music which gave you a back stage look at the industry's artists.  Here is the Behind the Music of Tom Petty for your enjoyment, if you have 1, 2, or 40 minutes to spare...

Perhaps you have witnessed a conversation between folks that evolves into a strained conversation which eventually evolves into an argument.  Undoubtedly, one of the conversants will eventually say something like this..."You just don't get it!  You don't know how feels to be me!" there is so much truth to this statement.  While every person around the world shares some things in common, (we breathe air, we consume food for nutrition, blood keeps us alive, and we all have a destination after we cease to live)  Our differences however, make us unique.  Our differences make us special.  Our differences make us interesting to others.  But our differences ARE NOT better than someone else's differences, we're just...different.

Tuesday's Musical Notes do not shy away from the fact that these differences can be the topic of conversation, consternation, and demonstration.  Please understand this.  THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE, THE HUMAN RACE!  We all belong to this race.  Every man, woman, boy and girl, regardless of color or culture belong to this one race.  We have discussed this topic with several Notes.  We covered it most thoroughly in  Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Black and White"  Yes, we are dealing with semantics, but if we could get to the true definition of the word race, I think we would see issues that we are currently experiencing begin to head in a much better direction.

In a recent article at answersingenesis.org, a challenge and conversation regarding the millennial generation departing the 21st century church details some of the rationale given by millennials for no longer attending the modern church.  The fascinating thing to me was the overriding theme... just like our conversations about race, the modern church finds it difficult to relate the Gospel message to the millennial generation, in other words, you don't how it feels to be me, so your manner of communication is ineffective.  Hmmmm.....

Dr. Ham details in this article the differences in how Peter and Paul related to the groups of folks they addressed in ACts.  Peter spoke from a Jewish tradition in a vernacular they understood, he knew how they felt.  Paul spoke from a non-Jewish reference point as he was called by God to be an emissary to the non-Jewish world.  His background allowed him, even though he was Jewish, to get them, to understand how they learned, and to explain the Gospel to them in a manner that they understood.  He made them feel like he knew how they felt.  In fact, in his first letter to the Corinthian church he says:

For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.  To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.  To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.  To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.  I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Paul is saying to the Corinthians, I DO indeed know how it feels to be you. This is our challenge in 2017.

In a previous career, many times I took it as a challenge to fulfill the needs of those in which I had very little in common.  Is that what we are not called to do as we love others as we love ourselves?  Matthew 22:34-40 ESV/The Message/NKJV  If we can master this, our potential for knowing how someone feels in ANY situation is greatly enhanced.  Our ability to have empathy for others is a common occurrence.  Let's face it people come, people go, some grow young, so grow cold.  Our challenge is how do we relate to them regardless of whether they come, go, grow young, or cold and then when we have developed a relationship, share the truth of Jesus.  Then you get to the point...

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "We Built This City" (Starship)

Today's Musical Notes are in no way intended to make light of the seriousness of our world.  We are saddened by the tragedy of the Sunday evening events in Las Vegas that most of us awoke to on Monday.  We firmly believe that events like these go to prove that lives (all lives) are precious and only love can be our salvation.  The hatred that is seen in our political arena, espoused, expanded, and amplified by the media (print, video, and social) do nothing to espouse, expand, and amplify the love we should have for one another.  The Beatles were right.  Love is all we need.  More importantly, the Bible speaks of the KIND of love we all need.  Specifically, the love of the One who gave His life so we could spend eternity future together.  His Name is Jesus.  We can love ANYONE in the power of the name of Jesus!  We pray today for those who were hurt Sunday night.  We pray for the families of those that were killed.  We are thankful and pray for those who responded to the scene in form of law enforcement and first responders.  But most of all we pray for the love of Jesus to permeate every sinew of our beings.

We are also saddened by the death of  Tom Petty.  He was a staple of '80s radio and an icon in the music industry.  For more on Tom Petty and his band The Heartbreakers in a way only Tuesday's Musical Notes can do, please visit:

It is with this spirit that we welcome you, dear friend, to Tuesday's Musical Notes in the only way we know how to present them...as a light shining in a dark world.

Psalm 90:12 - "So teach us to number our days  that we may get a heart of wisdom."

And now, Tuesday's Musical Notes...

Welcome to Tuesday!  Welcome to October!  Welcome to cooler weather and EVERYTHING pumpkiny...yes...I know that it isn't officially a word...I checked...(was that a laugh coming from dictionary.com?)  Anyway, welcome to probably my favorite month of the year.  Still warm enough outside to do some things, (high school and college football are in full swing, who needs the NFL!), the days are growing shorter (much to the chagrin of everyone in my family but me), and since it's the first Tuesday of the month, we get to reimagine an email only Musical Note from a little more than 5 years ago!  So put on your best flashback traveling gear and let's go back to the 2012 year!!!  It's time for The Notes!

Hey Howdy Ho!!!! It's Tuesday, here we go!!!!

If you need a handyman, I am not your guy.  I really wish that I was good at building or repairing things
(Tammy sometimes wishes this a lot more than I do).  I envy you guys that are able to see a problem and see exactly what needs to be built to solve that problem.  you know the type.  These are the folks that can go get the supplies they need and immediately set about building the perfect solution.   Then voila!!!  Problem solved.  I try my best to make friends with people who are creative with their hands, just in case I need their expertise at some point in the future.   Fortunately, I can usually talk to them in their nomenclature.....I read a lot and boy, does Bing ever help!!!  Sometimes their expertise and instructions go way over my head and I resort to smiling and shaking my head in an affirmative manner like I totally understand what they are talking about.  Some of these same folks smile and shake their head the same way when I attempt to explain a musical concept.   The joy of it is that what we have in common is that we are going about constructing something.

I guess in many ways we are all building cities of sorts.  If we can speak in a metaphorical way, that is.  While some of us have the talent and gifts to build physical things, ALL of us are building spiritual things.  And I don't mean building spiritual things in this sense.....Field of Dreams trailer.

In 1965 a group of musicians came together and joined the psychedelic movement that was blowing up in the San Francisco area.  Jefferson Airplane was formed at a time when music was being turned on its ear.  They experienced some success with hits like "White Rabbit" and "Volunteers" in the 60's and even as late as 1989 released an album under the Jefferson Airplane name.  Burdened with battles of drug and alcohol abuse, the band, Jefferson Airplane, didn't see much commercial success past the 1960's.  Then an interesting thing happened as it does sometimes in the music industry.

One of the beautiful things about old school record listening is pulling the plastic platter of goodness out of what began as, just a paper sleeve.  It later evolved into an incredible marketing tool as well as a way of passing credit to the artists who helped create said ear candy.  They were called liner notes.

If you happen to inspect the liner notes, (something you are unable to do in our download/streaming happy universe ah the joys of vinyl), you find that in most popular musical groups band member rosters transform.  Even super groups Chicago  (Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"and the Rolling Stones (Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Sympathy for the Devil"have had membership changes as they make the music to which we listen.  From a legal standpoint, the change in musicians must sometimes result in a complete overhaul of the band, including its name.  Such is the case with Jefferson Airplane.

As the musical tastes of the buying public transitioned, and much like the genealogical lists in the Bible, The Jefferson Airplane begat Jefferson Starship begat Starship.  These are 3 separate and distinct bands, 2 of which evolved from the original.    Each incarnation of the band retained its individual name and music for legal purposes and on occasion, they tour with the majority of bandmates that were in their respective groups.

Today's featured band is the of the Starship variety.  They continue to tour as Starship featuring Mickey Thomas and released the Loveless Fascination album in 2013.

The biggest commercial hit of any of the 3 groups was 1985's "We Built This City" from Starship's Album Knee Deep In The Hoopla.  It hit #1 in November of that year. Let's give it a listen:

In a touch of irony, Rolling Stone magazine named the song the #1 worst song of the 80's in a recent online poll.

("The Ten Worst Songs of the 80's" Rolling Stone Magazine reader's poll)

I'm not sure what this means, but with a couple of exceptions, I like those songs......This goes to show you how shaky people's tastes can be.  Perhaps Starship should have built their city on something other than rock-n-roll.

All throughout the Bible, God shows us the story of how man builds things.  In Genesis, we see early man building cities:
17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

In Genesis 11 we later see in the story of the tower of Babel, how man's ability to communicate caused him to want to create a name for himself rather than worship God.  Imagine being able to communicate with anyone in the world in a language you both understand.  This example from the Bible shows the danger behind that ability and how God confounded their ability to communicate.  From this action, God scattered them over the face of the earth.  Causes one to ponder on the virtues of facebook, snapchat, instagram, and even youtube.

In The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to the disciple Matthew chapter7:23-27 ESV/The Message/NKJVJesus tells us the story of the wise man who built his house upon the rock and the foolish man who built upon the sand.  The wise man dug until he hit the substance that he wanted for the foundation of his house.  I think this is a proper analogy for how we are to study the Bible.  Our houses or anything else we will build must have a strong foundation.   Until we explore what is beneath the surface, we won't know what that foundation is.  Sometimes the digging is arduous, other times it is simple, but there is always a clearing away of the topsoil to see what is underneath the surface of where we want to build.  A daily quiet time and Bible Study are essential to building your "city" on the most solid foundation ever.   Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV/The Message/NKJV tells us that as Christians we are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone....I can't think of anything better to build my city on.....can you?

Back in the '70's we had the Parade of Homes here in Searcy.  That was a big day for us as a family.  Mom and Dad would take us to the newest homes in town and we would get to parade through like we owned it.  The homes were beautiful and equipped with the newest gadgets that were available.  But these homes cannot compare to what Christians have in store.   In John, Jesus promises to go and prepare a place for us. Just imagine a place that Jesus, the creator of the world, is building just for you and me.  I think Keith Green put it best:

'Til Tuesday
Serving Him by serving you,
