Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Seasons Of Love (525,600 Minutes)" (1996 Cast of the Motion Picture Rent)

http://img08.deviantart.net/4a34/i/2013/364/7/e/a_musical_happy_new_year_by_rhov-d700ply.png

Welcome to the last Tuesday of the year!  We are just 2 days away from beginning the year 2016!  It is sure to be a year with new innovation, great challenges, and many reasons to celebrate.  It is also a leap year!  Hooray for February 29th!! (Sad that it isn't a Tuesday...)  Welcome to The Notes!!!

"Seasons Of Love" - Cast of the Movie Musical Rent from 1996

So what does your next 525,600 minutes include?  Resolutions kept?  Resolutions broken?  New friends? Additions to the family?  Tragically, even losses to the family...Such was the case for the cast of the Broadway musical RENT.  Composed and written by Jonathan Larson, the musical would come to its Broadway preview, only to see its creator die the day before.  As a tribute the cast performed "Seasons of Love" as an opener to the musical.  (It's original position is the opening of the second act).  It is a song that speaks to the ups an downs of life as we navigate a fallen world.  Ups and downs that are sure to occur as we enter 2016.

As we start this new year, Tuesday's Musical Notes would like to thank you for checking in with us each week.  We are grateful for the opportunity to share insights, interludes, and instrumentation with you.
In 2016 Tuesday's Musical Notes expects to exceed the 10,000 hit mark since its inception as a blog in 2012.  We look forward to sharing that occasion with you as we anticipate many other happenings that are sure to surprise, excite, enthuse, and perhaps even sadden us.

Annually, we take this week to remember some of the most read blogs that are posted to Tuesday's Musical Notes. Here's a reminder of 2014's top ten as we get started with the 2015 countdown:

That was our recap of the top Tuesday's Musical Notes blogs in all of Notesland from December of 2014.  Now let's get started with looking back at 2015. Let the countdown begin...

The last couple of years we have listed the top ten based on the readership of ALL the blogs in The Notes universe.  With the 2015 countdown, we are using the top ten read blogs from just THIS year (January 6, 2015-December 22, 2015). We will share an overall "Most Read EVER" during this year's recap as an "Long Distance Dedication" later in the blog. The top ten is tabulated by blogspot.com based on the blogs read by you!  So YOU determine the countdown!  (You may notice that there are 4 songs listed at #10.  That is caused by a 5 way tie at #9. So technically we are counting down the top 13 most read blogs from the 2015 Tuesday's Musical Notes year.)  Thanks for reading!  And now let it begin...

Well, maybe not that beginning, but this verse does serve as the foundation for everything that we do here at Tuesday's Musical Notes.  It relays the world view from which The Notes operates and opines.  It provides the context by which everything we do has an explanation.  Perhaps this is different from the view of the world you have.  Please read on...

The first song tied at #10 is the song that should bring a little "Spring" (or at the very least Summer) to your step.  It is the Carribean inspired, Reggae infused song about eliminating worry...from Bob Marley and the Wailers:

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them...God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.Genesis 1:26-31 NIV/The Message parallel

Keeping with a summer theme, with a little political history lesson thrown in for good measure, is also a #10 song on 2015's Tuesday's Musical Notes most read list.  Here is our personal favorite band, Chicago, with their 1972 hit,

Our third tied for #10 is the Country smash hit by musical icon Johnny Cash. Nothing more to say than..."Hello, I'm Johnny Cash"...

"
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.  And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die...When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”  Genesis Chapters 2 and 3 NIV/The Message

Finally on our tally for Tuesday's is the hit by one of Rock and Roll's most talented trios.  While upon its release it only went as high as #44, this song, like the book of the same name, is endeared by millions of fans world wide.  It is also a constant on "classic hits" radio. Also at #10 (the last one!!!) on our lyrical lineup of most read blogs of 2015, is the Canadian band Rush with their 1981 hit...

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come."  Romans 3:12-14 NIV/The Message parallel

We won't stop 'til we reach the top!

Instrumental music has touched the pop music scene in a variety of ways.  It can be found on the charts as reinterpretations of classic hits (remember "A Fifth Of Beethoven" and Hooked On Classics?), instrumentals from soundtracks (selected songs from Star Wars, the Indiana Jones series, or anything composer John Williams touches),or original compositions such as our #9 jazz crossover hit from Chuck Mangione.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son"  The Gospel of Jesus According to the Disciple John 3:16-17 NIV/The Message parallel

#8!

2015 saw its share of "farewell" toursTime will tell if these artists will indeed hang up their axes and store their microphone cables to retire and watch as a new crop of wannabee icons take over.  Announcing farewell tours in 2015 were acts, Shania Twain, Motley Crue, The Eagles, Alabama, Rush, Bone Thugs In Harmony, and Bon Jovi.  But without a doubt the biggest party to close down would be the farewell tour of this legendary jam band..  With our #8 most read blog from 2015, here is The Grateful Dead with something we are noticing in the mirror more and more these days...

Tuesday's Musical Notes confesses an affinity to the music of the 80's.  While we attempt to feature songs from all decades, there is just something special about that formative decade of big hair and the introduction of MTV.  One of the biggest bands from that decade was a "solo" project by one of the founding members of Genesis, Mike Rutherford.  The 80's saw the birth of Mike and the Mechanics and one of their biggest hits was from 1986.  With #7 on the countdown, here is...

"
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."  The Letter to Roman Christians from the Apostle Paul 5:8 NIV/The Message parallel

Because of the tie that we experienced this year at the #9 and #10 spots, we are now half way through the 2015 list of most popular blogs at Tuesday's Musical Notes.  We'd like to once again thank folks from all over the world who have checked in, discovered, or stumbled into our meanderings on music and The Messiah.  We hope that you find the insights here to be informative and life changing.  Most of all we hope that you find them to be God honoring.  For that is the reason we exist.  To bring honor and glory to the One who is worthy of a "thunderous ovation of praise"!  As a salute to you, the reader we bring this long distance dedication.  From a Christ follower who loves music and the folks who listen to it, to you our reader, #3 from last years countdown and the current all time #1 most read blog at Tuesday's Musical Notes...

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"  Romans 3:23 NIV/The Message parallel

...and the countdown rolls on...

At #6 is the supergroup, USA for Africa.  This one and done album featured some of the biggest names in entertainment coming together to provide resources for those hardest hit in the 80's by the major drought in Africa.  Grab a hand and start swaying....

"
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Romans 6:23 NIV/The Message Parallel

We try our best to not shy away from "controversial" topics here at The Notes.  We pursue opportunities to show grace and love while we attempt to redeem, not condemn.  2015 saw headlines that amplified the problems with prostitution and sexual sin that plague the United States and the world.  Those problems have been around for a very long time.  And in 1978  a song  came out by the band The Police that spoke to the redemption of those trapped in this lifestyle.  At #5 here is the Police with...

"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

 ...
Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.  They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.  They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.  After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

...
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  The Second Letter to Corinthian Christians from the Apostle Paul 5:18-21 NIV/The Message parallel  The Gospel of Jesus According to the Disciple Matthew 27:27-31 NIV/The Message parallel   The Gospel of Jesus According to the Disciple Dr. Luke 23:34 NIV/The Message parallel

You read 'em... we count 'em down...

Our #4 most read blog of 2015 features a question that everyone asks at some point or another.  Singing the question, is Linda Rondstadt from her 1974 album Heart Like A Wheel...

Tuesday's Musical Notes is read by great people in countries all over the world like, Malaysia, Mongolia, The Netherlands and Brazil.  We even have at least 1 reader who routinely checks in from Ukraine.  Дякую!!!

Now on with the countdown...

"After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb
...
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you."  Matthew 28 NIV/The Message parallel

A recurring theme at Tuesday's Musical Notes is time and our use of it.  In March of this year, we learned a little bit about how Steve Miller and his band wanted to spend their time.  It hits the countdown at #3 for the year...

"If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved"  Romans 10:9-10 NIV/The Message

The melody from #2 in our blog countdown has its roots in ancient Ireland and can be traced back to the late 1700's making it the oldest song on 2015's lyrical listing.  Featuring a video from the "Celtic Women" and our annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day, here is the Irish classic taken from the tune of "Londonderry Air"...

As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”  For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.  Romans 10:11-13 NIV/The Message parallel

Before we get to #1, we hope you have read the Scripture passages that have been surrounding the countdown of blog posts.  Perhaps they are not familiar to you.  That's ok.  Our intent is to show you something we discovered some time ago.  God exists as 3 in 1 (Father(God), Son(Jesus), Holy Spirit(Comforter)).  God created mankind with an eternal soul and placed him in a garden of perfection.  Everything that God made during that time He called good.  God gave man 1 rule.  The man Adam did not resist the temptation of the evil one and broke that 1 rule.  At this point the once beautiful relationship between God and man was broken.

God cannot exist where there is sin, or evil.  Man was separated from God at that point and placed out of the garden of perfection into a world where man and the earth now suffer from his disobedience.  From that point every man after has done wrong things.  No matter how hard man attempts to restore the broken relationship with God by being good, it does not happen.

God however, made a way.  He instructed Jesus to become a man.  Jesus experienced everything man experiences from the helplessness of being a baby to a death of the physical body.  His death was the most horrific torture man had ever invented and all of the world's evil was placed on Him.  He did this because as God, He loved man so much that He wanted a way for the broken relationship to be restored.  This can only happen as a matter of faith.  Faith in the fact that Jesus loved us this much and that our relationship with God can be restored through Him.

As we look at the #1 blog for this year, please take a moment and reread the Scripture listed above.  You are an eternal being.  You will exist after your physical body has ceased to function.  There only two places of existence for our eternal beings.  Heaven, where God IS, or hell, where God IS NOT.  Click on the links to take you to the full passages and allow Holy Spirit to transition your heart and change your life!  If you have any questions, you can always email back or post a comment.  We promise to first pray for you and then answer your question to the best of our ability.

And now with the most read Tuesday's Musical Note of 2015.  #1 features the band who began making music in 1977 and played their last concert together in 2002.  Their classic hits include, "Sultans Of Swing", "Money For Nothin'", and "So Far Away".  This year's #1 is the only song that the band Dire Straits has every had featured at Tuesday's Musical Notes.    Here with an assist from their friend Johnny is the #1 read blog at Tuesday's Musical Notes, it's Dire Straits...

And there you have it.  The most read blogs at Tuesday's Musical Notes from 2015!!! Didn't see your favorite song get the Tuesday's Musical Notes treatment in this year's countdown?  Check out the archives to see if some of your favorite songs are listed there.  Then tell your friends!  You never can tell what might be #1 in 2016!!!

We look forward to spinning some platters, cueing up the tracks, and pushing play with you each week of 2016!  But for now, this is Randy letting you know that we are here to Serve HIM by serving you, as we look forward to each Tuesday with great anticipation.  Thanks for tuning in!!!  We'll see ya in 2016!

"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me."  John 14 NIV/The Message parallel

'Til Tuesday,

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Peace On Earth/The Little Drummer Boy" (David Bowie and Bing Crosby)

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFWQ98mUe9M-EzSHkMkObmVLp0sSgQkAhvXXxdbZgCfCTqn_BbRCiTBo3_I06K_gwe-npaT07j4En69pSjGPOEnv1-T6LNDSqFgr28z4bSlrfKPGpwIa-PS9HCwl9spwQMQ1sLW9P8VP-E/s1600/christmas.jpghttp://agilelion.com/sites/default/files/field/image/Christmas-Nativity-Scene-Merry-Christmas-2013.jpg

"In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole empire should be registered.  This first registration took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.  So everyone went to be registered, each to his own town.

And Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David,  to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant.  While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. Then she gave birth to her firstborn Son, and she wrapped Him snugly in cloth and laid Him in a feeding trough—because there was no room for them at the lodging place." (Luke 2:1-7 Holman Christian Version of the Bible/The Message Paraphrase parallel)

And so it begins.  Welcome to another Tuesday.  But this is no ordinary "another" Tuesday!

It's the Tuesday before Christmas and all through the land, the people were wondering just what was the plan.  The blog they awaited was always a guess, so they waited and waited to see what was best.  The music and merriment they expected with cheer, but what was the song, how they waited, oh dear!  And then with a click it was time, it was here!  The artists and album, the day and the year.  "How far up the charts?" they wondered with glee.  A video, or two, they were eager to see.   So Tuesday is here, happy you, happy me!  It's Christmas week Tuesday, here we go...one.two..three...!!!

"In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock.  Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today a Savior, who is Messiah the Lord, was born for you in the city of David.  This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in cloth and lying in a feeding trough.”

Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

"Glory to God in the highest

and peace on earth to people He favors!"
When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the feeding trough.  After seeing them, they reported the message they were told about this child,  and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.  The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as they had been told." (Luke 2:8-24 HCSB/The Message)

"Peace On Earth/The Little Drummer Boy" - David Bowie and Bing Crosby from the 1977 Christmas Special "Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas"

He had been hosting an annual Christmas special, which began as a radio broadcast, since 1936.  He transitioned to an annual television broadcast during the Christmas of 1961.  The variety show would include some of music and Hollywood's biggest names appearing with Bing Crosby and his family singing Christmas classics and usually telling a story.  A generation of fans watched as Bing welcomed wife Kathyrn, and children Harry, Mary, Frances, and Nathaniel to the show beginning in 1968 and saw the children grow up as the specials occurred through Christmas of 1977.  (For a complete list of the Bing Crosby Christmas Specials just click here: "Bing Crosby's Christmas Specials" - stevelewis.info)

The above video with David Bowie is from the 1977 Christmas Special.  Bing had recorded the program in London with special guests, Bowie and Twiggy,  5 weeks prior to his death in October.   The special first aired in November of that same year.  "Peace on Earth/The Little Drummer Boy" was written especially for the show.  The "Peace On Earth" counterpoint was written to satisfy Bowie who was not a fan of perennial favorite "The Little Drummer Boy". For a complete flashback to Christmas Past, watch the entire show:  "Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas" - 1977 CBS

Many at the time wondered at the combination of the 30 year old Ziggy Stardust with the septuagenarian Bing. The youtube channel watchmojo solidifies this curiosity by naming the pairing of Bowie/Crosby #1 on its countdown of
"Top Ten Unlikely Musical Collaborations" - watchmojo.com

"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, wise men from the east arrived unexpectedly in Jerusalem,  saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”

When King Herod heard this, he was deeply disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.  So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born. “In Bethlehem of Judea,” they told him, “because this is what was written by the prophet:

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the leaders of Judah:
because out of you will come a leader
who will shepherd My people Israel.”
Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.  He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you find Him, report back to me so that I too can go and worship Him.”

After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was—the star they had seen in the east! It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure.  Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route.
"  (Matthew 2:1-11 HCSB/The Message)

Originally titled "Carol Of The Drum", the first recording of "Little Drummer Boy" would be by the Trapp Family Singers.  Yes, "the hills are alive" Trapps.  The 1955 recording would be on their last album prior to retirement and introduce the song to the world.  It would be recorded in 1958 by the Harry Simone Chorale, which would become the most well known, as well as most covered (over 220 versions in 7 languages), version of the song.  The single would soar up the seasonal charts from 1958-1962 and establish it as a classic of the Christmas genre.

Many criticize the carol as not having a Biblical base.  Angels, shepherds, wise men, Joseph, Mary, and the animals are all mentioned in the Bible narrative at the point where glory pierced the darkness of the fallen world and defeated the enemy once and for all.  Even the Kings, while not necessarily 3, are mentioned, there is no reference to little boy who happens along and worships Jesus by doing what he knows how to do...playing a probably handmade, skin and wood, ancient drum, in a rhythmic pattern that only a boy, and perhaps his Savior, could enjoy.  The Bible doesn't record his existence

It doesn't take too much of an imagination to understand that the "stargazers" from the east would have been wealthy.  Most "kings" of their regions would never have traveled alone.  They would have employed a caravan of folks and supplies to see to their needs as they traveled.  As a part of this caravan, one could easily imagine a young boy being a "squire", so to speak, to one of the scholars as an attendant on their journey.  After such a long pilgrimage, seeing Jesus as approximately a 2 year old child, chances are that in their excitement at having arrived where they were led by the star that they would share this with the entirety of their party.  We honestly don't know.  John tells us that many things about Jesus were not written down.  John 21:24-25 HCSB/The Message.

The tale of the Little Drummer Boy does make a great story and is emblematic of how we are to approach Jesus.  We come to Him with a childlike faith, bringing him the very best that we can with what He has given us, and lay it at His feet, or play it while He claps along.  pa rum pa pum pum...

'Til Tuesday,

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Winter Wonderland" (Pentatonix with Tori Kelly/Perry Como with Ann Blyth)

Welcome to Tuesday!!!  It really doesn't look like this down south right now, in fact, we are having above-normal temperatures...sigh.  It really should be below 50 degrees in December!  Yes, I  know...I digress...
Welcome to the place where the tunes are as cool as the temperatures...well, now that doesn't really work out well either...   Anyway...It's Tuesday and any temperature is good for a heapin' helpin' of  Tuesday's Musical Notes!!!  Let's Dig In!!!

Here we go down a snowy lane with the hottest group on the charts today...the all-vocal band Pentatonix (with an assist from Tori Kelly):

and for you traditionalists, Mr. Perry Como...

Written in 1934 by Felix Bernard (music) and Richard D. Smith (lyricist), "Winter Wonderland" has become one of the most well-known seasonal songs airing on radio waves around the world during November and December. Smith was said to have written the lyric while in a sanitarium where he was being treated for tuberculosis.  His inspiration was the Honesdale, Pennsylvania Central Park during the winter.  Over 200 artists have covered it since its initial release on RCA by Richard Himber and his Ritz-Carlton Orchestra.  According to ASCAP, the most popular cover since the late 2000's is the 1987 version by the Eurythmics from the various artists, Special Olympics supporting, A Very Special Christmas.  Give it a listen here:  "Winter Wonderland" by the Eurythmics from A Very Special Christmas, 1987

Let's flashback to the '70s...remember this prediction?

https://thetruthpeddler.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/big-freeze.jpg

By this point in time, we were supposed to be seeing glaciers forming in the Great Lakes, crops being unable to be grown for lack of warm weather, and a global pandemic of food shortages and cold weather.  Granted we were making mistakes with the environment in the 70's.  Remember this guy?  "Crying Indian" PSA  If you were in elementary school, this poignant PSA struck a nerve for saving the planet.  Much was done at that time to stop pollution in the United States due in part to conservationists and PSAs like this one that was aired in prime time.  Pollution in the United States has diminished steadily since legislation that began by the Environmental Protection Agency and other pollution-fighting measures.  Scientists at this time were predicting that the earth was in such a cooling period, enhanced by man-made air pollution, that the effects would be catastrophic by the turn of the century.  I haven't seen icebergs in the Great Lake region yet, have you?  Maybe we saved ourselves from permanently walking in a Winter Wonderland...or did we?

Fast forward to a few years after the turn of the century...

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj3QzYBmzu4lo_mCQrh2Dujl1ibEawA78jRwOuK5S_aM1sZiP75BAqtzj4-bfWSEDax9waTIHiTveUVgcoBdgwWItfEGQvdqJ0Kqc_5VKjAqTUnf31Bdnk5-4mj42YCEavXIk80ckfWNE/s400/1PBTimeCover.jpg

Perhaps we've done too good of a job, fixing our cooling problem.  Now we are faced with man-made warming of the planet!  Polar bears are looking for the icebergs that were supposed to be everywhere by this point. Penguins are seeking refugee status as the polar ice caps are all but melted away...sarcasm?  I think so...

Within a 40-year time frame, environmental science has gone the polar opposite direction (pun purely intended).  40 years ago we were in danger of freezing to death, and now we are on the verge of causing a thawing of the ice caps so bad that the water levels will rise so high Noah's ark couldn't save us...Good thing the Creation Museum (Creation Museum, Answers In Genesis) has one built just in case.

Do scientists of renown exist on both sides of the argument?  Sure they do. ("Confirmation Bias: Why Both Sides Of The Global Warming Debate Are Nearly Always Right, Forbes, August 14, 2012, "Global Warming: Fact Or Fiction", Answers In Genesis) Just like musicologists argue about who was the better lead singer for Van Halen, David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar? ("David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar: Michael Anthony Mulls Over The Great Van Halen Debate", somethingelsereviews.com, August 11, 2014)  In light of what the Bible has to say, arguing about environmental changes seems rather silly.

In case you hadn't guessed, Tuesday's Musical Notes does not buy into the idea that a 0.2 increase in the mean temperature over the last 20 years is an indicator that we are all about to melt off the face of the earth or become a polar bear's desert.  A more reasonable explanation is that someone is very greedy and they saw an opportunity to make money, once again, by scaring folks into a frenzy about their SUVs causing grannies begonias to not live as long as they once did because it's too hot.  Couple that with millions of dollars in marketing efforts, a pitchman in the form of a former Vice President of the United States, and a world view that is for lack of a better descriptor, "worldly" It is easy to see how the idolatry of man-made climate change can have its grip on world leaders. ("Historic Deal To Curb Global Warming Deal Reached", Dallas Morning News, December 12, 2015, even though there is not a way of holding ANY country accountable to the agreement)  Is this a simplification of the argument, sure it is.  But there is a much better, less panic-inducing, way to look at the environment and man's responsibility to steward it.  Que flashback music...no even further...nope still not far enough...

From this point forward the argument really becomes about world view.  If your worldview is based on the Bible, you understand that man has a responsibility to steward the earth:  Genesis 1 NIV/The Message parallel.  With the temptation and subsequent sin of Adam and Eve, everything got thrown off kilter.  This is where man-made environmental damage began, with the sin of the first man and woman.  From that point until the worldwide flood, man has had to fight the physical earth to get food to grow.  Man had to fight the elements to survive through the seasonal changes.  Then the worst global environmental disaster known to mankind occurred, the Great Flood.  World Region Historical Flood Myths, wikipedia.org Since the time of the flood, mankind has struggled to subdue the elements.  So much so that one could feasibly see the struggle segueing into a religion.  At this point, the struggle, worship, or "protection" of and with the environment becomes an idol.  Referring to another controversial document, the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20 NIV/The Message parallel.  Exodus 20 makes it very clear that there is no other thing in our lives that is to be worshiped other than God.  And when it comes to the physical earth, God's got this...Psalm 29:3-10 NIV/The Message parallel, Psalm 68:9-10 NIV/The Message parallel, Jonah 1:4-6 NIV, The Message parallel, Mark 4:35-41 NIV/The Message parallel

None of the Scriptural evidence regarding God's control will make any difference if your worldview is not based on the Bible and God's plan for man's (and I think ultimately the earth's) redemption.  You see

God loves us very much...John 3:16 NIV/The Message parallel

God loves us despite that sin...Romans 5:8 NIV/The Message

Our sin separates us from having a relationship with God.  We get to choose which we would rather have, a relationship with the God who loves us and created us, or a relationship with the world that hates us and only wants our destruction...Romans 6:23 NIV/The Message parallel  WE GET TO CHOOSE

Jesus paid those sin wages by dying the most horrific death ever created by man so that we can have a relationship with God, His Father...2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV/The Message parallel

Jesus was buried in a sealed tomb but came back to life 3 days after his death on the cross.  He did this freely, with no strings attached, because He loves us that much!!!  We can accept this gift by believing that Jesus did all of this for us.  We must believe this with every sinew of our being and cede control of our lives to Him...Romans 10:9-10 NIV/The Message

If this is something you are prepared to do, the Bible says that Jesus will restore the broken relationship between you and God...Romans 10:13 NIV/The Message Paraphrase

Take just a minute and allow the truth of these passages from the Bible to sink in.  They are powerful enough to change your heart AND your worldview.  Who knows, one minute you may be breaking out in a sweat from a 0.2 mean degree change in the temperature, the next you're just...walkin' in a winter wonderland...

Tuesday's Musical Notes - "Sleigh Ride" (Pentatonix)

Hey, Howdy, Ho, Ho, Ho!!!  It's December and it's time to go!  Featuring the most popular sounds of the season. It's Tuesday's Musical Notes, that's the reason!  You show up each week and read line by line, waiting for stories and truths beyond time.  So let's get it started, the sleigh bells are ringing!  With tunes so familiar, you'll find yourself singing!

Welcome to the 2nd Tuesday of December 2015!  It's time for another classic seasonal favorite with sprinkles of spiritual insight to boot!  Today's feature song is something that many dream about doing when wintry weather comes.  C'mon, let's go for a "Sleigh Ride"!

For those who love Christmas music, "Sleigh Ride" is a must-listen-to favorite during the holidays.  Artists from all over the musical spectrum have recorded this classic whose original composition began during a heat wave in the summer of 1946. Leroy Anderson biographer, Steve Metcalf,  states that "'Sleigh Ride'...has been performed and recorded by a wider array of musical artists than any other piece in the history of Western Music." Even in your own Christmas music section, you can find many of your favorite artists who have covered this non-Christmas, Christmas song.

The composition was completed by February of 1948 and saw its introductory recording come in 1949 at the baton of Arthur Fielder and his Boston Pops Orchestra.  Original composer Leroy Anderson recorded his own version of "Sleigh Ride" in 1950, and it has since become the most favorite instrumental version of the song.  ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) named "Sleigh Ride" its most popular piece of Christmas music in the USA from 2009-2012, 60 years after its first recording. Not too shabby for a song that mentions very few "Christmassy themes". Johnny Mathis' 1958 recording of "Sleigh Ride" from his 1958 Merry Christmas album is the most popular vocal version of the song.  The possibility is high that since you first read the title of this week's Tuesday's Musical Notes, your favorite recording of this seasonal classic has been running through your head. (We would be remiss if we didn't include the one currently going through our heads..."Sleigh Ride" by Chicago from the 2003 album What's It Gonna Be Santa?)

Obviously, "Sleigh Ride" has become one of the most covered songs in musical history.  Even with the wide variety of arrangements out there of the Christmas classic, it didn't make the list of the most covered songs.  Yes, there is a list, and yes here is the link: "From “Sweet Home Chicago” to “Yesterday,” The Most-Covered Songs In History" from salon.com July 2014

A "cover" of a song is a recording that is completed by someone other than its original recording artist or composer.  Many articles have been written about the "most covered".  We chose the one from salon.com as it included music other than from the pop genre in its listing.  Tuesday's Musical Notes has opined in the past regarding "covers" and our puritanism for the original recordings.  However, as the old saying goes, "Imitation is the highest form of flattery", there are rare occasions when the occasional cover will compete with or excel over the original.  One case in point:  Tuesday's Musical Notes - "You've Got A Friend"

Even for those who aren't religious, the Bible winds up being one of the most "quoted from" books in history.  In this sense, its passages are the most "covered" pieces of literature in existence. In his book, God Breathed, Josh McDowell explains how the Bible has been copied and verifies its inerrancy through his research.  We highly recommend this book to any Small Group leader or staff member as it quantitatively supports what we know in our hearts to be true, The Bible is 100% truthful and without errors.

As an example of the Bible being the most "covered" piece of literature, The Notes' main source for Scripture passages, biblegateway.com, has 53 English translations and paraphrases from which folks can choose.  This doesn't account for the other languages and dialects that it has at its disposal (even a Cherokee translation of the New Testament).   Here is a list of the most searched-for and requested 100 Verses from biblegateway.comThe 100 most-read Bible verses at BibleGateway.com, blog from May 2009  These cherished passages of Scripture assist people in finding strength, comfort, and resilience through trials, as well as providing the vehicle for which memorization can take place through repeated reading.

Repetition is not only a means by which we can memorize Scripture, it is also a means by which God can highlight something really important.  If His Word says it more than once, you might want to pay attention to it.  According to Bible-Study-Tool-Repeated-Words.blogspot.com, the most repeated passage in the King James Version of the Bible is, "And The Lord spake unto Moses, saying,".  It occurs 72 times in just 3 books of the Bible; Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.  Moses is one of the most revered Bible patriarchs and is considered by most scholars the author of the Pentateuch, the first 5 books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).  If you look a little deeper, you can see that this particular passage has insight past introducing a conversation that is about to occur between God and Moses.

When something is repeated, it usually means there is some import to it or its meaning that folks should remember. (Did you see what we just did...we repeated a concept because we thought it was important, not just because our memory was failing...)  In the case of "And The Lord spake unto Moses, saying," the takeaway is that the Creator of the Universe felt so comfortable with the man Moses, that many conversations with him were worth having.  Most Christian folks would quickly admit that the relationship they have with God through the shed blood of Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not as good as the one-on-one relationship with God that Moses had.  The Lord spoke directly to him!!!  According to recorded Scripture, this personal communication happened at least 72 times!  We however have an advantage over Moses.  We DO have the shed blood of Jesus that purifies us!  We DO have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us!  So that means we CAN have a similar one-on-one relationship with God that Moses had.  We need only listen when The Lord speaks to us.  Sometimes this is difficult.  Sometimes we don't want to hear what God is telling us.  Sometimes we aren't in a position for Him TO speak to us.  Sometimes He may have to repeat what He is saying over and over again.  Notice that the barriers to God communicating directly with us are all put into place by us...

This Christmas season, let us refresh our commitment to better communicate with God.  That begins by us repeatedly listening to and for Him.  He has things to speak unto us this Christmas season and every day if we allow His Word to get past those "sleigh bells ringlin' jing, jing, jinglin' too"...

'Til Tuesday
